Morning. Before you leave the house, think of three acts of kindness you could do today that no one would trace back to you. Write them down.

Suggestion: Ideas: pay for someone's coffee, leave a book with a nice note on a park bench, clean a shared space, leave a generous tip.

First act. Do it early and do it fully. If it's paying for someone's coffee, ask the barista to give it to the next person. Walk away before they arrive.

After the first act, notice the feeling. There's a warmth that's different from being thanked. It's self-contained. It's the feeling of being good without being seen.

Second act. Make this one require effort, not just money. Clean a public space. Carry someone's bags. Return shopping carts in a parking lot. Physical kindness hits different.

Suggestion: The more invisible the act, the more powerful the practice. Clean a toilet that isn't yours. That's Zen.

I watched someone find the book I left on the park bench. They looked around, confused, then smiled. They sat down and started reading. I kept walking.

Third act. Do something that takes courage. Write a note of encouragement and slip it under a neighbour's door. Leave a heartfelt review for a small business. Anonymously help someone you see struggling.

We perform kindness for likes, for karma, for the warm feeling of being seen as good. Today I tried kindness without the performance. It's quieter. And deeper.

Evening. Write down what you did today in a private journal. Don't share it. Not on social media, not with friends, not with your partner. Let this day be between you and the world.

Suggestions

  • The hardest part is not telling anyone. We're wired to share good deeds. Today, hold them privately.
  • Think about what would make someone's day better with zero strings attached.
  • Small and specific beats grand and vague. A perfect cup of coffee left for someone beats a vague "random act of kindness."
  • Notice how it feels to give without receiving recognition. That feeling is the whole point.

Guerrilla beauty

Guerrilla beauty: Instead of kindness to people, beautify a public space. Plant flowers in a neglected spot, clean a dirty bench, leave a small artwork.

Written kindness

Written kindness: Leave three encouraging sticky notes in public places — bathroom mirrors, book pages, bus stops.
