pace

Route stops
Vismarkt (Fish Market)
The last working fish market in Belgium. Tiled walls, shouting vendors, the freshest catch you'll find in any city.
Desire de Lille
A 19th-century patisserie that hasn't changed since your grandmother was young. Order the flan or the eclair.
Kloosterstraat
Antwerp's antique and vintage street. Walk slowly, peek into shops, find a hidden cafe.
Het Eilandje — MAS area
The revitalized harbor district. Take the escalators inside MAS for free panoramic views, then eat at one of the waterfront spots.
Groenplaats
End at the main square. Get a beer at one of the terraces. Watch the cathedral turn golden in the evening light.
Arrive at the Vismarkt before 10am. Walk through the tiled hall. Listen to the vendors. Buy a portion of freshly peeled grey shrimp and eat them right there, standing.
6The smell of the sea in the middle of a city. Vendors with red hands and loud voices. This market has existed for centuries and it looks exactly like it should.
Walk south to Desire de Lille. Order a coffee and their legendary eclair or a seasonal pastry. Sit at the marble counter if there's space.
5Stroll down Kloosterstraat. Pop into any shop that catches your eye. The vintage stores here are genuine , no curated Instagram aesthetic, just decades of collected beauty.
Suggestion: Look for the small courtyard cafes hidden between the shops. They don't advertise , you have to find them.Find a bench on Kloosterstraat. Sit for five minutes and watch the neighbourhood. Antwerp moves at a different speed than Amsterdam. Slower, more deliberate.
Walk north to Het Eilandje. Take the free escalators inside the MAS museum all the way to the rooftop. Each floor gives you a different view of the city and the river.
Come down and eat lunch at one of the waterfront spots. Order something local , a stoofvlees sandwich or a bowl of mussels if it's the season.
18Walk to Groenplaats. Choose a terrace facing the cathedral. Order a local beer , De Koninck if you want authentic, or a Tripel if you want to feel the day.
6Five stops. Five flavours. One city. I tasted Antwerp today , not in a restaurant but in the spaces between restaurants. The streets, the stands, the counters where locals eat standing up.
Watch the cathedral as the light changes. This building has been here since the 14th century. Your day of eating is a speck in its history. That's comforting.

- Bring cash. Some of the best spots are cash-only market stalls.
- Wear comfortable shoes , the old town is cobblestone and your feet will thank you.
- Saturday morning is ideal. The markets are fullest, the city most alive.
