End the day with ice cream near Gouda before heading home. The kids have earned it. So have you.

afternoon· 20 min

Arrive at Station Gouda. If you're cycling, rent bikes at the station. If driving, park and start from here. Get coffee at one of the station cafes , you'll need the energy.

4Suggestion: Electric cargo bikes can be rented at Gouda station. Game changer with small kids.

Cycle east along the Hollandse IJssel. The path is flat and car-free. Point out the cows to the kids , they'll be feeding them later.

Suggestion: Stay on the north bank. The path is smoother and the views are better.

The moment when the city disappears and it's just polder. Flat green in every direction, the sky enormous, the kids suddenly quiet because they're actually looking.

Arrive at Kaasboerderij Van Zuylen. Taste the jong, belegen, and oud varieties. Buy a piece of whatever your favourite is , it'll be lunch.

8Suggestion: Ask to see the cheese-making room. They often let visitors peek in the morning.

Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel

"Taste fresh farm cheese made metres from where you stand"

Let the kids feed the goats. Buy a feed bag for 1 euro. Stand back and watch them negotiate with a goat who wants all the pellets at once.

"Bottle-feed calves at 2pm and 4pm — kids remember this for years"

familieskidstoddlersstroller_ok

A four-year-old explaining to you, with complete authority, how cows work. They've been here for 45 minutes and they know everything now. You just nod.

Let them climb the hay bales while you sit on the terrace with coffee. This is the golden hour of parenting , they're occupied and you're not needed.

Suggestions

  • Start early , kids have energy in the morning and the farms are quietest before 11.
  • Pack a picnic blanket, sunscreen, and wet wipes. You'll need all three.
  • Bring cash for the cheese farm and ice cream. Not everywhere takes cards.
  • If you're cycling with small kids, an electric cargo bike changes everything.

Variations

When it rains

Rainy day edition

Rain doesn't stop a Groene Hart day — it just changes it.

  • Skip: — Picnicking in rain with kids is misery. Eat at the cheese farm instead.
  • Note: Both the cheese farm and De Koeienstal have indoor areas. The hay bale climbing is in a covered barn.
  • Note: Bring rain suits for the kids. They won't care about the rain — you will.
With toddlers (1-3)

Toddler tempo

Same spirit, half the distance, double the snacks.

  • Skip: — Too much cycling for a toddler day. Drive between stops instead.
  • Time: — Go to the cheese farm first. Toddlers are best before noon.
  • Note: Skip De Koeienstal if the toddler is done. The goats at the cheese farm are enough animal contact for a small one. No shame in calling it a half-day.
Adults only

Without kids

Same route but linger longer, taste more cheese, and enjoy the silence.

  • Skip: — Skip the children's farm. Spend more time at the cheese farm and the river.
  • Note: At Kaasboerderij Van Zuylen, ask for the aged cheese tasting with wine pairing. They sometimes offer it on Saturdays.
  • Replace:
November-February

Winter edition

Cold weather, warm farms, hot chocolate, and steamy breath.

  • Skip: — Too cold for a river picnic. Eat lunch at the cheese farm's indoor seating.
  • Note: De Koeienstal barn is actually cosier in winter. The hay insulates and the calves are extra cuddly.
  • Replace:
  • Time: — Start at 10:30 in winter. The light is better and the farms open later.
