Urban sketching is drawing as a way of really seeing a place. This play turns an hour outdoors into a loose, honest sketch of your local landscape: a market, a park bench view, a busy corner. It is not about a flawless drawing, it is about catching the essence of a spot and sharpening how you look at the world.
Pack light, a small sketchbook, a pen or pencil, maybe a little watercolor for a splash of color. Find a spot that inspires you and where you can sit for an hour. Set a timer for gentle pressure, then start with big shapes and loose lines before adding detail, shadow, and color as time allows. When the hour is up, review your sketch kindly and notice how much more you saw of the place than you would have just walking past.

Gather your kit: a small sketchbook, pencils or waterproof pens, and a little watercolor or colored pencils for color.
Pick an inspiring spot where you can sit comfortably for an hour, a market, a park, a busy corner.
Set a 60-minute timer. The gentle pressure keeps you moving and stops you overthinking.
Start with big shapes and loose lines for the outline, keeping your strokes relaxed. Add detail as you go.
Fill in the finer details, then add color to bring it alive. Use watercolor sparingly.
Review your sketch kindly. Notice what you captured well and how it sharpened your eye, then share it if you like.
